This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
Darrell Clarke’s return to the Mem should’ve been a celebration. A new season, a fresh chapter, and the man who gave us some of our best memories back in the dugout. The crowd was up for it, the atmosphere was hopeful — but football rarely sticks to the script.
Instead, it was a harsh reminder of what life in League Two can be. Despite dominating for large parts of the game, Rovers came away empty-handed, undone by a single second-half strike from Harrogate’s Stephen Duke-McKenna.

Bright start, but no breakthrough
The first half belonged to Rovers. We moved the ball well, pressed with purpose, and looked the stronger side. Taylor Moore rose highest from a corner and saw his header smash against the bar. Alfie Kilgour looked certain to score from close range before being denied by a brilliant sliding challenge from Anthony O’Connor.
We had Harrogate on the ropes — but we lacked the final touch. And in this division, that always leaves the door open.
One lapse, one goal
Just after the hour, the visitors made their moment count. Substitute Shawn McCoulsky held the ball up, Bryn Morris slipped a clever ball in behind, and Stephen Duke-McKenna timed his run to perfection, lifting it over Luke Southwood for the only goal of the game.
There were shouts for offside, but the flag stayed down — and the Mem fell flat.
Late drama, no reward
The introductions of Hutchinson, Harrison, and Dewsbury gave Rovers fresh legs and fresh impetus. And it almost worked.
Ellis Harrison hit the post after being slid through by Hutchinson. Moments later, Ollie Dewsbury looked set to equalise after a teasing Sparkes free-kick, only for Warren Burrell to produce a stunning recovery tackle.
On another day, it’s 2-1 Rovers. But this wasn’t that day.
Still early, but work to do
Darrell Clarke deserved better on his homecoming. So did the Gas faithful. But there were positives — the first-half dominance, the energy off the bench, the clearer game plan.
It’s not about tearing it up and starting again — it’s about sharpening up and being ruthless. In this league, chances don’t come in bunches. When they do, you’ve got to bury them.
The journey starts here
One game in, one tough lesson learned. This group has the tools — but it’ll take time, belief, and a bit of patience.
Darrell’s back. The fans are behind him. Now it’s about turning performances into points.
Up the Gas.
