Vital Gas understands that Bristol Rovers are closing in on the signing of goalkeeper Luke Southwood – and if this deal goes ahead, it could be a very smart bit of business as the club looks to bounce back from relegation.
The 26-year-old spent last season with Bolton Wanderers, providing reliable back-up during their promotion-winning League One campaign. Although chances were limited behind Nathan Baxter, Southwood remains highly thought of for his professionalism, attitude, and ability to step in when needed.

Before Bolton, he came through the ranks at Reading, making over 25 appearances in the Championship, and impressed with a full season on loan at Cheltenham Town in League One. He’s calm under pressure, vocal, solid with the ball at his feet and commands his box well – exactly the type of goalkeeper Darrell Clarke will want as he reshapes the squad for League Two.
The key here is what Southwood’s arrival would mean for Jed Ward. Ward was one of the few bright spots last season, showing maturity beyond his years in tough circumstances. But at just 20, asking him to carry an entire League Two campaign without experienced competition wouldn’t be fair or sustainable.
Southwood wouldn’t be coming in to replace Ward, but to challenge him and push him. It’s healthy competition – the kind that lifts both keepers and raises standards across the squad. Ward could still very well be Rovers’ long-term number one, but bringing in someone of Southwood’s pedigree helps protect both the team and his development.
It’s a move that makes sense on every level. Experienced, reliable, and still with plenty to offer — Southwood would add real depth to a key position and show that Rovers are serious about rebuilding properly.
Let’s hope this one gets done. A strong goalkeeping duo could be the foundation Clarke builds from.
Up The Gas.
